Thankful is a Choice and Takes Effort

In the book, “7 HABITS of Highly Effective People,” Steven Covey writes:

“Those of us who watched  the Lunar Voyage, Apollo 11 were transfixed as we saw the first men WALK on the moon and return to earth. Superlatives such as ‘fantastic and incredible’ were inadequate to describe those eventful days.

But to get there those astronauts likely had to break out of the tremendous gravity pull of the earth. More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off, in the first few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half a million miles.

Habits too have a tremendous gravity pull, more than most people realize or would admit. Breaking deeply embedded ‘habitual tendencies’ such as procrastination, impatience, criticalness, or selfishness, tendencies that violate basic principles of human ‘effectiveness’ involve more than a little will-power and a few minor changes in our lives. Lift-off takes a tremendous effort. But once we break out of the gravity pull our freedom takes on a whole new dimension.”

Join us this weekend at Journey Church Cynthiana. We wrap up our fall series from Galatians, FREE. We have discovered Jesus came to set us (everyone) FREE from sin and death (Galatians 5:1). The Bible makes it clear those who follow Jesus must make a daily choice about old habits, traditions, and behavior. A change is needed to be free.

Our old lifestyle is not easy to walk away from; even after surrender to Jesus as Lord and Savior. Breaking old habits after baptism is like breaking free from the pull of gravity. (Like the Steven Covey story shared above). This will take more than will-power. We need God’s power, traveling great distances - lifting off into our new orbit; a more effective, consistent, and focused walk with Jesus each day.

Our final message from Galatians sets us up for an attitude shift and change of heart. We may need a new perspective (new plan) before Thanksgiving arrives in a few days. When we follow Jesus being thankful is a choice to be made; its not automatic. Regardless the size of turkey and ham on the table, or people joining us this year: be Thankful. Jesus changes everything.

We’ve got more baptisms this weekend at Journey Church. Let us know if we can help you get your Jesus story started (started again). Include God in your weekend and Thanksgiving plans this year. Bargain shopping, sharing great food and football - Yes!  Also add God/worship with others to your list - Yes!

2024 - Best Thanksgiving ever.
